Sensitive skin is more than just a minor annoyance. If you have a weakened skin barrier, you are more vulnerable to infections and even direct-contact diseases. You may also feel self-conscious about any imperfections. Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take and small lifestyle changes you can make to combat sensitive skin. Here, Lauren A. Daman, M.D., P.C., a leading skin surgeon in Connecticut, explains how to combat some of the most common signs of sensitive skin.

5 Signs You Have Sensitive Skin

1. Dry & Tight

Skin that feels dry or tight is dehydrated. To restore moisture, use lotions that contain ingredients like glycerin and propylene glycol, which draw water into the skin. Ingredients like mineral oil, lanolin, and petrolatum can then lock in this moisture.

2. Peeling

Skin that peels is severely dehydrated and may need something other than a standard lotion. In this case, avoid petroleum-based products if the skin is sunburned because such lotions will trap heat, worsening the peeling—and the pain. Instead, apply creams or ointments that have anti-inflammatory ingredients like cortisone or aloe vera.

3. Red or Bumpy

skin surgeonRed, bumpy skin is irritated and may even be inflamed. Avoid products that contain harsh chemicals like exfoliants and retinoids to minimize irritation, and look for topical treatments that contain more soothing, natural ingredients, like colloidal oatmeal. If the redness or bumps persist for more than a few days, visit a skin surgeon for an accurate diagnosis.

4. Frequent Breakouts

Suffering from adult acne can be frustating. Unfortunately, if you have sensitive skin, breakouts are common. The best way to treat them will depend on their underlying cause, which can range from minor irritants to hormonal imbalances.

5. Frequent Irritation

People with sensitive skin may experience irritation on a regular basis. Everything from cigar smoke to perfume can cause hive-like rashes, especially on the chest and face. The best way to treat this kind of irritation is to avoid its triggers.
