If you’ve recently explored your options for dentists, you may have noticed that while some have “DDS” following their names, others are listed as “DMD.” You’re likely wondering what the differences are between these two distinctions and which is right for you. The following guide offers some insight into both types and how to decide between the two.

A Guide to Two Types of Dentists: DDS & DMD

What Does DDS Stand For?

DDS is an abbreviation for Doctor of Dental Surgery. It was the original degree sought by dentists across the United States. In fact, until 1867, it was the only degree awarded to individuals who completed dental school. During that year, Harvard University coined a new term. It would be used as a moniker for the degree they would award attendees upon graduating from their dental school.

What Does DMD Stand For?

Because Harvard is known for naming their degrees after Latin phrases, the phrase “Doctor of Dental Surgery” wouldn’t fit with their theme. Instead, they decided to name their dentistry degree “Dentariae Medicinae Doctoris.” This phrase translates literally from Latin to dental medicine doctor. Nowadays, however, it is often used as an acronym for “Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry.”

What Is the Difference Between Them?

dentistsPerhaps surprisingly, there is no difference between the two degrees. It’s simply a different name for the same program with identical requirements for education and training. According to the American Dental Association, it is up to universities to choose which degree is awarded to students. However, they both indicate graduation from an accredited dental school.

Thus, when seeking out dentists, it doesn’t matter whether the professionals you’re considering have “DMD” or “DMS” following their names. What does matter, however, is that their practice offers a broad range of services to help you maintain optimal oral wellness. Their office should be inviting and comfortable so you can enjoy as relaxing an experience as possible while receiving treatment. Above all else, the dentist and their fellow staff members should be professional, courteous, and committed to helping you achieve the results you want.
