When participating in activities this summer, there’s nothing as refreshing as eating a cold treat. However, you have to be careful about what kind of treats you snack on. Ice cream might taste amazing, but its high sugar content can increase the risk of cavities. The kids’ dentist at Alaska Dentistry for Kids in Anchorage shares some summer treats that are also good for your teeth.

3 Summer Treats for a Healthy Mouth

1. Cucumber Water

kids' dentistIt’s common knowledge that water keeps you hydrated and flushes harmful bacteria out of your mouth. However, if you don’t feel like drinking plain water every day, try adding some cucumber to it. Cucumber is refreshing and contains antioxidants that reduce skin redness on hot days. Peel off some strips of cucumber skin and throw them into a large pitcher of water, and let it sit for an hour before drinking.

2. Yogurt & Fruit Ice Pop

Traditional ice pops are packed with lots of sugar that can harm you and your kids’ teeth. That’s why kids’ dentists suggest making your own ice pops from yogurt and fruit. Yogurt contains healthy bacteria that help fight off harmful mouth bacteria, while fruits, like strawberries and kiwis, are packed with vitamin C that improves gum health.

Put 1 cup of frozen fruit and 2 tablespoons of honey in a blender. Then, put 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 cup of yogurt in a separate bowl. Lastly, place alternate layers of fruit puree and yogurt in paper cups and keep them in the freezer until they are solid.

3. Carrots

Carrots are another healthy snack you and your family can eat in the summertime. They have an abrasive texture that helps stimulate saliva production and scrub plaque and food particles off of your teeth. When you take your kids to the park, don’t forget to pack some carrots in a plastic bag.

These treats can keep you refreshed and improve the health of your teeth at the same time this summer.
