Moving into your first apartment is exciting, but there’s a lot of preparation to be done. You’ll ensure a smooth and easy move if you know what to expect. The property management team at Munson Realty, Inc. in La Crosse, WI, recommends taking each of the steps below before you move into your student housing.

What to Do When Moving Into a Student Housing Rental

1. Set Up Utilities

Utilities such as gas and electric need to be set to turn on the day you move in, so you won’t be left without lights or climate control. Others, such as internet and cable, could wait, but you may want them sooner for a smooth move. Ask your landlord which utilities you are responsible for, then call the utility companies in your area to schedule the start of service.

2. Prepare Deposit

If your landlord has not already asked for it, they will expect a security deposit and the first month’s rent — on your move-in day. Refer to your lease agreement to see what they expect. Some landlords require a money order, cashiers check or personal check.

3. Get Renters Insurance

Renter’s insurance is very affordable, so call an insurance company of your choice to set it up. You may save some money if you bundle it with other policies you already carry, such as your car insurance.

4. Prepare the Mail Situation

Ask your apartment management what the setup for mail will be. Many communities have an area with all the mailboxes in it, or slots in the door where you can get your mail. If you have a mailbox, they should give you the key for it along with your apartment key at move-in. Ask how you can expect to receive packages. Set up a P.O. box if you need one; otherwise, forward your mail with the United States Postal Service and update your mailing address everywhere else.

5. Clean

The last renters should have cleaned the apartment before they left, but it’s still a good idea to do some cleaning of your own. Purchase some cleaning supplies, including disinfectant wipes, and clean all surfaces before you start to unpack. When you pick up packing supplies, get items like hand soap, shower supplies, toilet brushes and plungers as well as other things you’ll need to get started in your new apartment.
