What to Know About Depression & Suicide This September, Elyria, Ohio

While many people enjoy the change of seasons during the month of September, you or someone you love may be suffering from depression. Unfortunately, the condition can lead to thoughts of suicide. Since September is National Suicide Prevention Month, take the opportunity to learn more about the condition.

The Basics of Depression

What Is Depression?

Depression, also known as major depressive disorder, is a mental illness. It prevents an individual from going about their daily routine. The major symptoms that come with this condition are isolation, sadness, and hopelessness. Due to these feelings, depression can cause someone to contemplate suicide. It can also be triggered by an event, such as the death of someone close or a job loss. People of all ages, classes, races, and backgrounds can become depressed, but the National Institute of Mental Health has found that females are twice as susceptible as men.

What Are the Signs That Friends & Family Should Watch For?

depressionDepression is marked by a wide range of signs that can vary from person to person. However, the most significant signs are a general sadness along with a lack of interest in regular activities. Family and friends should also keep an eye out for irritability, too little or too much sleep, a shift in appetite or weight, fatigue, sudden crying spells, thoughts of suicide, and social isolation.

What Are the Main Types of Treatment for Depression?

There isn’t a surefire cure for depression, particularly since the exact cause of the illness is still unknown. As a result, treatments vary in their effectiveness. One of the main treatments is medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. These medications attempt to influence serotonin levels, which scientists believe could be a cause of depression.

Another treatment is psychotherapy, which typically involves problem-solving and interpersonal and cognitive behavioral therapy. It’s been found that coupling therapy with medication is often the most effective solution. A third, more rare treatment type is transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS. This process sends magnetic signals to an individual’s brain to alter their mood and reverse symptoms.
