Putting off water heater maintenance and repairs can mean you’ll wake up to a cold shower. But that might only be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to your water heating system. To take preventive measures, it’s wise to know the warning signs your unit needs attention. Some of the most common are discussed below.

How to Spot Water Heating System Problems

1. Cold or Lukewarm Water

An extinguished pilot light or broken heating elements can cause water to run cold or lukewarm. The issue can also be due to a large buildup of sediment at the bottom of the tank, preventing proper functionality.

2. Discolored Water

When the faucet or shower head starts spitting out rust-colored water, it’s time to replace the system. Brown water usually indicates corrosion, which eventually leads to major leaks and repairs. However, this isn’t always the case; the symptom can also result from issues with the local water system. Check if the cold water runs clean before calling for help.

3. Strange Noises

heatingIt’s not uncommon for a heater to make a bit of noise when warming the water. But, loud clanking and clanging should send off warning signals. Unusual sounds often indicate mineral deposits in the unit, causing it to overcompensate as it runs. You can typically solve this problem by simply flushing them out.

4. Old Age

If you don’t remember the last time you repaired or replaced your water heater, it’s probably time for an inspection. Water heaters last anywhere between five to 12 years with the proper maintenance. If you exceed this time frame, replace the unit to avoid damage and other plumbing problems.

5. Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure is frustrating, especially if it impacts your daily routine. Sediment buildup in the pipeline is one of the most common causes of the issue, as is kinked or damaged piping. Have a plumber inspect it right away before the problem worsens.
