The next time you hire professional movers, you can make a difference in the fight against poverty by hiring a company affiliated with Move For Hunger. This non-profit organization partners with moving companies across North America to collect non-perishable food items and deliver those items to food banks. Not every mover participates in the program, but choosing one that does can have a positive impact on your community.

All About Move For Hunger

How It Worksmovers

Move For Hunger founder Adam Lowy grew up seeing a lot of food wasted when people moved, thanks to work through his family’s moving company. He founded the organization based on the concept many people clean out their pantry and kitchen cabinets when they relocate. Instead of throwing perfectly good food items away, you can instead donate them to a family in need in your own community. Simply set aside your unopened food products, and the movers you hire will collect and deliver it to the food bank of your choosing.

Why It Matters

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 13% of Americans live in poverty, and more than 10% of Hawaiians live below the poverty line. More than 300,000 of Hawaii’s poverty-stricken residents are children under 18. Food banks such as Our Lady of Good Counsel Church Outreach and Peniel Pearl Gates Church, both in Pearl City, Hawaii, provide food to those families in need, but food banks depend on volunteers and donations to serve their community.

Anyone interested in making a difference through Move For Hunger can find local movers on the organization’s website. In Hawaii, M. Dyer & Sons is an active partner that routinely donates canned goods and non-perishables to Hawaii Foodbank. Residents can also stop by M. Dyer's warehouse or office at any time to drop off food donations. Call (800) 922-2490 or visit them online today to get a quote for your move.
