The first sign that you may need water heater repair is that there is no hot water in your home. There are several reasons why equipment is no longer heating your supply, and figuring out the source of the problem will help you narrow down the solution. Below are a few reasons this could be happening.

Why Is There No Hot Water?

1. Pilot Light

water heater repairWhen your water heater relies on a pilot light, the burner under the tank has jets that ignite to send heat to water contained inside. If the burner is dirty or corroded, or a standing pilot light fails, there may not be enough oxygen flowing to ignite, and the jets will not turn on. If relighting the pilot light doesn’t work, you may need to call for water heater repair to troubleshoot the issue.

2. Gas Valve

A malfunctioning gas valve cuts off the fuel supply to the burner, which means no heat for water inside the tank. A faulty gas valve may also come with a pungent smell of rotten eggs, which indicates that there is a leak somewhere in the line. Call the gas company immediately, as well as a plumber for repairs.

3. Heating Element

For electric equipment, the heating elements are necessary for bringing temperatures up. Sometimes the heating element burns out, but there is usually a second one that will still heat your supply. If both go, water will come out cold. Sometimes the fix is as easy as a blown fuse while other times repairs are more extensive.

4. Sediment

Every few months, water heaters need to be cleaned to remove sediment and other debris that has settled. When too much sediment has built up, it can interfere with other components and reduce your system’s ability to heat the water supply.
