Linoleum and vinyl flooring terms are frequently used interchangeably. Both come in a wide variety of styles and colors to suit any aesthetic and take little time to install but otherwise feature distinct differences you need to know about before you make a flooring decision. Use the following information to determine which is best for your home.

What Are the Key Differences Between Linoleum & Vinyl Siding?

Material

Mainly comprised of linseed oil from flax seeds, linoleum is a natural product also featuring wood flour, cork dust, and rosin. It provides a welcome addition to any eco-friendly home as it will not release volatile gasses that contribute to poor indoor air quality. Inorganic petroleum and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are the main components of vinyl flooring; however, many manufacturers now use less PVC in the product to reduce off-gassing issues.

Longevity & Water Resistance

vinyl flooringLinoleum flooring typically comes with 25-year warranties and lasts 40 years or more with the right care. Vinyl flooring usually lasts about 20 years with proper maintenance and features 15-year warranties. Linoleum’s moisture susceptibility makes it a poor choice for bathrooms and other water-prone areas, while vinyl holds up well against all liquids. It is also one of the only flooring options installable over a subfloor or an existing vinyl or linoleum floor.

Price

Vinyl flooring costs as much as 50% less than linoleum and maintains its glossy appearance whereas linoleum yellows after years of sunlight exposure. Linoleum may cost more upfront but lasts at least two decades longer, especially if you apply special coatings to prevent yellowing, also known as ambering.

Installation & Maintenance

Both flooring options come in snap-together tiles or glue-down sheets for relatively simple installation. The occasional sweeping and damp mopping keep each flooring type in great condition, with linoleum flooring benefiting from waxing every few years to maintain its sheen if you do not apply protective coating.
