4 FAQ About Rhinoplasty, Manhattan, New York

Rhinoplasty refers to the surgical augmentation of the nose to change its size, shape, and proportion. This common form of cosmetic surgery is primarily performed for aesthetic purposes, although the procedure can also improve a patient’s ability to breathe. Consult the following guide to determine if rhinoplasty is the right procedure for you.

Everything You Need to Know About Rhinoplasty

1. What Is the Surgery Like?

You will have at least one preoperative consultation to discuss the changes desired and for the doctor to outline the surgical procedure. You will receive complete instructions of what to do in the days leading up to the surgery, including fasting, limiting medications, recovery preparation, and so on. For the surgery itself, you will be given general anesthesia or a local anesthetic.

2. What Does the Procedure Entail?

Before the surgery, you will be given either general anesthesia or a local anesthetic. During the procedure, the doctor will work with the bone and cartilage in the nose to create the shape discussed in the preoperative appointments. Fillers, fat grafts, or silicone implants may be used as part of the reshaping process. This cosmetic surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, and in most cases, you should be able to go home the same day.

3. How Do I Choose the Best Doctor?

cosmetic surgeryNot all cosmetic surgeons specialize in rhinoplasty, so make sure the doctor you choose has experience and is board certified. Schedule consultations with a few doctors to find out about procedures, experience, costs, and post-operative care. Ask to see before and after pictures of other patients, and talk about potential risks and outcomes. Ask for referrals from friends or other medical professionals, and don’t be afraid to request client references from the doctor.

3. What the Recovery Period Like?

Recovery typically takes anywhere from 10 to 14 days for acute symptoms to subside, and up to a year for swelling to go away completely. Immediately after surgery, the nose will be packed with gauze and put in a splint or cast. This will come off after about a week. You should expect some pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty breathing in that first week. Once the splint is removed, however, breathing will be easier. After two weeks, you should be able to return to work.

Cosmetic surgery can improve self-confidence and self-acceptance. Rhinoplasty is a common and effective way to create the look you’ve always wanted.
