Making pasta from scratch is one of the steeper cooking challenges. There are a handful of steps involved, and each one must be executed well to yield a successful final product. Here’s what goes on in the kitchen of your favorite Italian restaurant when they prepare this delicious meal.

How Pasta Is Made

Whisk & Knead the Dough

After putting flour, eggs, salt, and olive oil together in a large bowl, the chef will whisk all the ingredients together. Once everything is mixed, they take the dough out of the bowl and knead it into a smooth ball. After kneading the dough into a ball, they let it rest for about 30 minutes.

Roll the Dough

Italian restaurantDepending on how much dough is available, they’ll cut the large ball into segments of four or more. Then, the chef will use a roller to roll each portion into long, thin sheets. They’ll also use flour throughout this process to keep the dough from sticking to the table.

Fold, Cut, & Loosen

Once the dough is long and thin, it’s rolled up into layers. Then, the folded dough is diced into small rectangular pieces. Once the entire sheet is cut up, the chef will unfold each piece into a long strand of pasta.

Cook!

The pasta must be boiled for 5 minutes and lightly salted as needed. After just a few minutes in a pot, it's ready for dinner!
