Your car’s battery occupies relatively little space under the hood, but it’s a crucial component nonetheless. Without a good battery, your vehicle won’t start. Fortunately, it’s easy to prevent this problem by recognizing when your battery is on its way out and getting a replacement from a reliable parts store. The auto repair specialists at Trester Used Auto Parts outline some common signs of a deteriorating battery, below.

When to Get a New Battery at Your Parts Store

1. Slow Starting

parts storeAs the battery loses power, the engine will have trouble turning over when you turn the key. The ignition may make a slow cranking sound, and it may take multiple tries for the engine to start. A slow start is not an uncommon occurrence for even a healthy battery in cold weather, but if it happens more than once, you’ll want to have the battery tested.

2. Visible Deterioration

Old batteries are prone to leaks, which will cause visible corrosion around the posts or terminals—the nodules on the battery marked with a + or -. The battery case may also start to swell, giving the entire battery a bloated appearance.

3. Illuminated Dashboard Light

A faulty battery sometimes causes the check engine light to turn on. A mechanic or parts store staff member can hook up a computer to the engine and run a diagnostic check, which will tell you whether the battery is the problem.
