Hardwood is a beautiful, durable flooring that can increase your home value. Along with regular vacuuming or sweeping, there are some steps homeowners can take to keep this surface in top condition for many years. If you are new to the care of hardwood floors, follow this beginner’s guide to their proper upkeep.

How to Maintain Hardwood Floors

1. Protect High-Traffic Areas

Wood is most likely to be damaged in areas where people and pets walk most. Place rugs in high-traffic areas, such as hallways, kitchens, and entryways, to prevent scuff marks, dings and, scratches.

2. Use Hardwood Cleaners

hardwoodSome household cleaner may be too harsh for your flooring. Check the label to ensure it’s formulated for hardwood. Even when using products designed for wood, use as little water as possible to prevent warping and water stains. Instead of soaking a cotton mop with soapy water, spray a damp microfiber cloth or mop with the hardwood cleaner and swab the floors with it.

3. Recoat Regularly

Hardwood floors are typically treated with a sealant you must touch up every three to five years. Depending on the type of wood, you may have a wax, polyurethane, or oil-based sealant. Check with a flooring specialist to identify the right product for your surfaces. This protective layer prevents water damage and friction so you can keep floors looking great for many years to come.
