When you’re constructing a building from the ground up, the sewer installation is one of the first steps of the process. Because it’s such a fundamental aspect and serves so many different fixtures, extensive planning is required. If you’re wondering what it all entails, here are the basics of this project.

5 Steps of Sewer Installation When Building on New Land

1. Determine Measurements

The initial step in a sewer installation is figuring out the correct measurements. These include the elevation of the pipes as they relate to the fixtures and other piping; the length of the pipe; and the slope, which is dependent on the aforementioned values.

2. Open Trench

Once calculations have been made, the ground can be excavated for the pipe trench. This involves carefully removing the dirt and grading it to create the proper slope. Depending on the quality of the land, a bedding material, such as sand, may be installed to provide extra support for the pipe.

With the trench correctly prepared, it’s time for the pipe installation. Generally, contractors will start from a low elevation and move their way up to the higher one to ensure proper drainage and prevent leakages.

4. Double Check

After all the pipes have been laid, they’ll need to be checked again for any poorly fitting connections and breaks. Even though precise measurements were taken, they should always be reexamined before the final step.

5. Fill the Trench

Assuming all the pipes are connected properly, all that’s left is to fill the trench so that the line is hidden and the rest of the building process can continue.
