Missing teeth can impair your ability to chew and speak, as well as contribute to poor self-esteem. Fortunately, there are two effective options for replacing a missing tooth: bridges and dental implants. Below, the dental team at Ronald W. Ristow, DDS, in Oconto Falls, WI, offers the following guide to each procedure so you may know the facts about each before you choose.

Dental Implants

Dental implants consist of a titanium post inserted into the jaw at the location of the missing tooth. This post creates a new “root” structure that bonds in place with the bone. An artificial tooth is then created to anchor on top of this post. The tooth will be color matched to existing teeth and has a life span of about 20 to 30 years with good oral care.

Implants look and feel like real teeth and require normal oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing. They also help to keep the jaw from shrinking or receding by mimicking the action of a real tooth. The drawback of implants is that the process involves multiple surgeries and longer healing times. They are also often not covered by insurance and can be costly. Your dentist will provide a timeline of the procedure and determine if an implant is appropriate for you.

Dental Bridge

The crowns act as a bridge for an artificial tooth that is held in place by the neighboring teeth. It is not fixed to the jaw itself, and no artificial root is created.

Bridges are easier to install than dental implants and can usually be completed with two visits and no surgery. They are typically less expensive than implants and may be covered by insurance. However, crowns need to be replaced every 7 to 10 years and can weaken the teeth they are affixed to over time. They also don’t prevent the jawbone from shrinking in the area of the missing tooth and require more vigilance to keep clean.
