While you should expect some noises from your home appliances, certain sounds may indicate the need for professional HVAC repair. But which fall into the category of normal and which mean you should contact a contractor? Here are three sounds that indicate the need for AC repairs, and why you shouldn’t wait for service.

When to Schedule HVAC Repairs

1. Rattling

While many of the HVAC system components are welded together, others are held together using screws, which can come loose over time—usually due to the movement of the system itself. If rattling is left unchecked, some parts may break free, potentially damaging your system or causing your HVAC unit to fail.

2. Buzzing

Sometimes, buzzing can also indicate the blower unit is out of balance, causing the system to work harder than it needs to. If the buzzing is coming from inside your house, it could be a sign you need to replace the air filter or the air handler coils are dirty. Depending on the severity of the sound, your system might need anything from an urgent repair to cleaning during your next maintenance appointment.

3. Clicking

When the air conditioner or furnace switches on, you might hear a slight clicking noise. While this is a completely normal part of the climate-control process, a continuous clicking noise may signal a bad relay switch or a damaged thermostat. Damaged capacitors, fan motors, or control boards can also cause ongoing clicking that needs to be addressed by an HVAC repair professional.
