It’s normal for women in their twenties and thirties to see a gynecologist regularly, for contraception, family planning, and otherwise maintaining their reproductive health. Most women stop having children as they reach 40, and their libido is likely to dip as they age, too. As a result, seeing the gynecologist no longer seems like a priority. However, vaginal health is important for women of all stages of life and regardless of their family plans. Here, the friendly team at North Little Rock Women’s Clinic shares a few tips.

Gynecologist’s Tips for Women 40 & Older

1. Make Kegel Exercises Part of Your Routine

Women should do Kegel exercises at every age, but women 40 and over may need extra help keeping their pelvic muscles strong. Older women are more vulnerable to conditions like urinary incontinence, as life events like childbirth and menopause can weaken these muscles. For optimum effectiveness, do three sets of 15 reps every day.

2. Use Condoms Every Time You Have Sex

gynecologistIf you can no longer get pregnant, it may seem unnecessary to use contraceptives. As long as you’re sexually active, though, you’re at risk of contracting an STI or STD. Unless both you and your partner are entirely monogamous, use barrier contraceptives routinely, even after menopause.

3. Try THERMIva®

It’s natural for tissues in the pelvic area to stretch and loosen over time, even if you have never been pregnant or delivered a child vaginally. With procedures like THERMIva®, though, a gynecologist can tighten vaginal tissue to restore your confidence and sexual fulfillment. This noninvasive treatment uses controlled radiofrequency to heat collagen cells, forcing them to contract, thereby tightening the surrounding tissue.
