If you’ve just had a residential paving contractor install a new asphalt driveway, you want to ensure the investment is kept in top shape for as long as possible. There are a few care tips to keep in mind, so you don’t accidentally damage it. Here are the do’s and don’ts of caring for asphalt.

Do:

Keep it clean.

Dirt and grime will pull out the oils from new asphalt. Try to clean off the driveway weekly with a hose and broom—or more frequently if you notice excess debris and dust. Keeping it clean will prolong its life span.

Fill cracks.

Temperature changes can affect your driveway. The expanding and contracting asphalt might crack, especially during the winter. Use crack filler as soon as you notice any damage, so small imperfections don’t turn into larger problems.

Call professionals.

residential pavingWhen you see cracking, holes, or other trouble forming, call a residential paving contractor to assess the situation. If you notice cracks or holes, have the professionals come in to make repairs. If left unaddressed, large holes or cracks can damage a vehicle or potentially cause an injury.

Don’t:

Drive on it for 3 days.

Keep all car traffic off of your new asphalt for at least three days after the process is complete. If the temperatures are particularly high, waiting five days to drive and park on it is better. Walking, however, is OK immediately after residential paving is finished.

Place heavy vehicles on new asphalt.

It takes six months to a year for asphalt to completely harden and cure, which leaves a soft surface until the cure is complete. Large, heavy equipment, trucks, and concrete will leave depressions in new blacktop.

Drive on the edges.

Driving on the edges will cause crumbling if there is no side support. To create driveway strength, build up the edges with topsoil after the asphalt is fully cured—about a year later.
