One foundation of proper dental care is brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day. Brushing removes food particles, bacteria, and plaque. However, the dentists at Parkway Family Dental in Kalispell, MT, regularly warn their patients about the consequences of overbrushing. Here, they explain symptoms of aggressive brushing and what you can do about it.

Dentists’ Top 3 Symptoms of Overbrushing

Enamel Erosion

Brushing too aggressively erodes enamel, or the protective outer tooth layer. Enamel wears away faster if you brush immediately after drinking or eating anything acidic because you are scrubbing the acid into the teeth. Enamel erosion increases the risk of tooth sensitivity and decay and leads to dull, grayish teeth. Reduce enamel erosion by brushing gently and waiting at least 20 minutes before cleaning teeth after eating, even if you did not consume anything acidic. This gives saliva enough time to neutralize food acids.

Gum Recession

dentistProlonged aggressive brushing eventually wears away gum tissue to reveal tooth roots, resulting in increased sensitivity and tooth loss. Gum grafts treat severe cases of recession to protect sensitive tooth nerves. Brush gums carefully to remove plaque and floss daily to remove food particles and excess bacteria.

Sensitive Teeth

Enamel erosion and gum recession may not be apparent until you visit the dentist; but you will likely notice the increase in tooth sensitivity. When teeth no longer have a protective enamel layer or gum tissue to cover their roots, they become extremely sensitive, resulting in pain when you eat hot or cold foods and beverages. Even a slight gust of wind can cause sensitivity and pain.

Many dentists recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean teeth. Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums to remove bacteria and plaque underneath the gumline. Try cleaning teeth with your non-dominant hand to ensure a gentle technique.
