Your roof plays a big part in keeping you and your family members safe. When rain, snow, or strong winds hit your area, your roof protects your belongings and provides the shelter needed to stay comfortable. However, if you don’t properly maintain your roof, it can deteriorate quicker than normal. Here are some of the do’s and don’t of roofing care to help you maintain this crucial part of your home.

Do:

Clean your gutters.

Leaves and other debris can accumulate in your roof gutters over time, resulting in blockages that cause water to build up and overflow. This excess water can accumulate around your home’s foundation or make its way beneath your roofing, causing leaks and water damage to your home’s structure. Cleaning your gutters at least twice a year will keep them working well.

Trim overhanging branches.

When tree branches hang too close to your roof, they can fall on top of it during a big storm and cause damage. These branches can also give raccoons, squirrels and other pests access to your roof, where they can pull up shingles. Have an experienced arborist trim your branches when necessary.

Don’t:

Handle roofing repairs yourself.

roofingIf your roof needs repairs, you should never attempt to do the job yourself. Roofing repairs can be dangerous work if you don’t have the proper training. Whether you are dealing with damaged shingles or a leak, you should leave it up to a professional roofing contractor.

Skip annual inspections.

Even if your roof is fairly new and seems to be in pretty good shape, you should still have a trained professional give it a thorough inspection once a year. They can check for signs of damage that aren’t noticeable to an untrained eye.
