How Can You Identify the Type of Grass Used in Your Landscaping?, Jessup, Maryland

When it comes to keeping your landscaping looking its best, caring for your grass is an essential priority. But not all grasses are created equal—different varieties have different fertilization and maintenance needs. As Howard County, MD’s Columbia Tree & Lawn Service explains, recognizing what type of grass you have is vital for appropriate care.

3 Common Maryland Grass Varieties for Landscaping

1. Zoysia

Zoysia is commonly planted in yards that receive full sun for most of the year. It’s recognized for its density—the grass is so dense that it can sometimes feel like a prickly carpet. Without consistent mowing, massive seed heads will appear on the narrow leaf blades. It also grows slowly, and only requires water during drought conditions. Zoysia should be cut to 1.5 inches in height.

2. Fine Fescue Blend

This cool-season installation combines several varieties of fescue grass to create a soft, comfortable lawn. Fescue blends are recognizable for their thin, hair-like blades. This fast-growing grass requires more frequent mowing and watering than other varieties, and thrives in areas that receive moderate shade. Fescue blends do best with fertilizers that have high phosphorus content.

3. Kentucky Bluegrass

landscapingDeriving its name from the bluish tint found in its dark green leaves, Kentucky bluegrass is a popular choice in cooler climates. Deep irrigation is better than frequent watering for strong root growth, and most varieties don’t fare well in heavily shaded areas. Mowing heights should be kept between 2 and 2.5 inches, though in dry periods, this height should be increased to 3 or even 4 inches.
