Hawaii has a rich and colorful heritage, and the staff at Waimea Valley is committed to sharing Hawaiian culture with visitors of all ages. The beautiful 1,875-acre Valley is home to some of the most exciting natural wonders of Oahu as well as 6 archaeological sites for guests to see. They’ve developed a variety of fun, hands-on educational programs for visitors that are included in the admission fee. Some favorites are highlighted here.

5 of Waimea Valley’s Favorite Activities

1. Hele Wawae Mo‘olelo: History Walk

Every day at 10 AM, 12 PM, and 2 PM come join alaka’i (guides) as they take you on a historical walk through Waimea Valley. Discover Waimea Valley’s rich history, visit Kauhale our traditional Hawaiian living site, learn about Hawaiian agriculture, and more. This tour generally runs around 30 minutes.

2. Na Mea Mele/Hula: Musical Things

In this activity, Auntys share some of the various traditional musical and hula instruments that are made with natural materials. These type of instruments have been used for many generations. Come see, touch, and learn how to play!

 

3. Na Mea Pa‘aina: Hawaiian Games

hawaiian-culture-waimea-valley-oahuThe Hawaiian game site is located just past the Upper Meadow and is set-up so anyone can learn how to play traditional games of Hawaii.  Participate in ‘ulu maika and moa pahe‘e (games of skill), konane (game of strategy) and ‘o‘o ‘ihe (game of strength).

4. Wahi Kupuna: Elders Place

Located at the Visitor Center right when you enter the Valley the Elders Place is a special corner to learn the stories, songs, games, and history of both Waimea Valley and Hawaii.

5. Na La‘au Hawaii: What’s Blooming

Join Waimea Valley’s plant collections specialist as they take you on an educational walk through Waimea Valley to see rare and seasonal “blooming” plants from here in Hawai‘i and all around the world. Tours are on the first and third Sunday, and Thursdays.
