To maintain your landscaping throughout the year, you need to keep your plants lush, healthy, and growing. This is much easier to do once plants are well-established and have put down deep roots. However, even the hardiest and established plants need continuing care, especially in the heat of the summer.

Watering

landscapingA common misconception among homeowners is that older and larger plants don’t need to be watered. There is some truth to this idea since established plants are better able to withstand short dry spells and can reach deeper for water. However, there are limits on a plant’s ability to thrive in dry conditions. If your landscaping has gone several days without rain, especially in hot summer conditions, you’ll need to water the yard yourself to keep your plants from suffering. Younger, more sensitive plants will likely need daily watering.

Mulch

One way you can slow water loss and help protect your plants from hot, dry weather is with mulch. Choose from the many varieties available at your local garden center and lay down a generous layer over the roots of your plants. This insulates the ground from sunlight and heat, helping it retain water and making those reserves available for your plants.

Signs of Stress

To make sure your plants are getting everything they need, watch for the signs they’re undergoing stress. Wilting and browning leaves can indicate a plant isn’t getting the water it needs. Some homeowners mistake these plants for being dead, dying, or diseased, but they probably only need frequent watering to perk back up.
