Moving is always stressful, no matter how many times you’ve done it in the past. However, with a bit of preparation and help from experienced movers, the process can be both seamless and easy. Once you’ve found an experienced residential moving team, make sure you have a plan in place. Here’s an easy checklist to help you simplify your relocation and ensure that transitioning into your new home goes as smoothly as possible.

Guide to Moving to a New Home

Sort Through Your Belongings

You don’t want to move a bunch of items that are no longer useful or needed. Go room by room and sort through the items in each space. Pull out any belongings, clothes, electronics, and furniture that you no longer want and get rid of them. Host a garage sale, donate them to a charity, or take them to the appropriate waste disposal center if they’re no longer usable.

Contact Doctors

If you’re moving out of town, make sure to bring copies of medical records to any new physicians. Talk to your doctors at least six weeks ahead of the move-out date, so they have time to track down the appropriate documents. They might even be able to make recommendations on physicians near your new home.

Pack & Label Everything

MovingPack boxes about a month ahead of the move-out date. Start by packing up out-of-season clothes, decorations, and other items that you won’t need at the old house. Once loaded into the box, take the time to label the contents. This will reduce confusion when you’re unpacking.

Notify Insurance Agents

Make sure to speak with your insurance agents about updating the address on policies. If you’re just relocating to the other side of town, coverage will likely stay the same. However, if you’re going out of state, the policies might need to be transferred to a new agent licensed there.

Create a Move-Out Bag for Each Family Member

When the house is packed up and you’re waiting on the movers, it’s important to keep items used on a daily basis close at hand. Pack an overnight bag with a change of clothes, any medications or supplements, a toothbrush, and phone charger, so you’ll be ready for the journey.
