Not everyone enjoys chlorine pools, but that doesn’t mean they have to completely forgo the experience of swimming in a pool on a hot day. Saltwater pools provide an excellent alternative for sanitizing water, working just as reliably as conventional chlorination systems, but without the undesirable effects. If you have sensitive skin, or prefer to avoid chlorinated pools for other reasons, here are a few benefits of installing or converting to a saltwater treatment system.

5 Reasons You Might Prefer a Saltwater Pool

1. Lower Maintenance

One important thing to understand about saltwater pools is that they do use chlorine to disinfect water—just not as much as conventional pools. The chlorine in saltwater pools actually replenishes itself, meaning you don’t need to add additional chemicals. The replenishment process uses electricity to convert salt to chlorine.

2. Kinder to Skin & Hair

The number one reason a person might prefer a saltwater pool is that it won’t irritate skin or eyes as much as a conventional pool might. For some people, the effect is even more beneficial, with saltwater giving them softer and better-moisturized skin.

3. Fewer Fumes

Saltwater pools, by contrast, are less pungent. There is also far less salt per cubic inch in a pool than in the ocean, so they don’t smell or taste like the sea, either.

4. Less Clothing Damage

Over time, even small amounts of chlorine will fade clothing—and sometimes even hair. Showering after swimming, and using precise chemical measurements during pool maintenance, will make this less likely to happen. However, if bleaching is still a concern, you’ll appreciate that saltwater pools have less of a potential to stain hair and clothes.

5. Pain & Stress Relief

Those recovering from injuries, with sore muscles, or who suffer from joint pain tend to get more relief by swimming in a saltwater pool. It’s not just the act of floating that’s soothing, but also that saltwater helps reduce inflammation.
