Your smile might look healthy and perfect, but you still need to keep an eye on the health of your teeth and gums. Gingival recession, or receding gums, is a common problem that occurs gradually, meaning you may not even realize it's happening. If you live in or around Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Robert Petrtyl and his general dentistry practice can assist you in identifying, preventing, or treating the problem.

Gingival recession occurs when the part of the gum that surrounds the teeth begins to pull away, revealing more of the tooth itself and creating pockets around the gum line. Unfortunately, bacteria can seep into these pockets and damage tissue, bone, and ultimately, the tooth. Here's what Dr. Petrtyl wants you to know about preventing and responding to gingival recession:

  • Your Teeth May be Sensitive: If you notice an unusual amount of sensitivity around a particular tooth, or teeth, this could be an early warning sign. You might also notice that a tooth looks longer than it used to, and you may even feel a notch near your gum line. If you detect these problems, head to the dentist right away!
  • Dr. Petrtyl Can Help You Treat The Problem: Gum disease, in mild cases, will be responded to with a careful cleaning at your dentist's office. You may also be given antibiotics to help combat the bacterial growth. In more serious cases, surgery could be necessary.
  • There Are a Variety of Potential Causes: You may be at risk for gum recession if you...
    • have gum disease
    • have a family history of gum disease or recession
    • brush your teeth aggressively
    • do not receive regular dental care
    • use tobacco products
    • grind/clench your teeth
