There’s still time to get started on building the perfect summer patio or deck. Before you finalize the plans, though, Patio Designers would like to share some of the most important do’s and don’ts for creating a space the family and guests will enjoy year-round. They’ve built custom patios and decks throughout Northern California for over 13 years, and recommend the following pieces of advice for a successful project.

Do:

Choose the appropriate material.

Two of the most popular deck materials are wood and composite. The latter is ideal if you’d prefer a stain-resistant, affordable, and maintenance-free material. If you prefer the look and feel of real wood, just be prepared to re-stain the deck every few years to maintain its color and protect it from the elements.

Create a design plan based on how you’ll use the space.

patioConsider the activities you’re planning on using the deck or patio for and incorporate them into the design. For example, if you’ll be installing a hot tub, ensure your deck can handle the weight. If you plan on sunbathing this summer, or growing a container garden, choose a side of the home that receives the ideal amount of sunlight.

Don’t:

Forget to include a rain cover.

Don’t let your guests get caught in the rain. If you’re planning on hosting lots of backyard gatherings on the new patio or deck, don’t forget to weatherproof your outdoor space. In other words, consider installing a covered patio or awning in case of rain. Another option is to include a retractable tarp with your installation.

Disturb the neighbors.

When you’re ready to start entertaining on the new patio or deck, don’t let your fun disturb the neighbors. Install a tall privacy fence to surround the space, which will not only shield you and the guests from prying eyes but dampen the music and conversations. That way, everyone can have a wonderful time without it being intrusive.
