When it comes to eating healthy, getting started can be a real challenge, especially if you already have a bunch of food in the house. One area of the home that always seems to be cluttered is the refrigerator. A cluttered fridge can get in the way of your healthy eating goals. Here are a few tips to help you organize the space and optimize it for healthy eating.

How to Organize the Refrigerator

1. Get Rid of Old Food

It’s easy for food to disappear into the back of the fridge and freezer. Periodically clean out and declutter the shelves. Look for old and expired food and throw it away. Remember, if it’s past the best buy date, it’s not worth salvaging.

2. Make Easy-to-Grab Healthy Snacks

RefrigeratorWhen hungry, most people reach for a convenient snack. Often, these come in the form of pre-packaged and highly processed foods. Stock up on veggies and healthy snacks, and make them easy to grab on the go. Rinse, chop, and prepare fruits and veggies and place them in pre-portioned containers to help control calorie intake throughout the day. You’ll be less tempted to reach for sugary snacks when the munchies hit.

3. Make Use of the Crisper Drawer

When buying fresh produce, make sure it’s stored properly in the crisper drawers. Keep broccoli, lettuce, carrots, and berries in the high-humidity drawer and apples, bananas, peaches, and other fruits in the low-humidity one to extend their freshness significantly.

4. Keep Junk Food Out of Sight

When you open the fridge or freezer, the last thing you need to see is junk food. If the rest of your household is not trying to eat healthily, keep the junk food out of sight. Push those tempting items to the back of the fridge and cover them up with healthy alternatives.

5. Keep the Receipt

Rather than tossing your receipt the moment you get home from the grocery store, keep it on the front of the fridge. This will help you stay on top of your inventory and reduce food waste throughout the week. If you find that you’re going through a particular product more quickly, make a note on the receipt so you can adjust your shopping habits in the future.
