While most people don’t often consider sign design, they do know an iconic sign when they see one. Some are so quintessential that they outlived their intended purposes and now rest easy in the annals of history. This is certainly true of the following examples, which are easily recognizable to people all over the country.

3 World-Renowned Signs & Their Origins

1. The Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood sign isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, this iconic design was created in 1923 because of an ad campaign for a new housing development known as Hollywoodland. Additionally, the sign was only intended to be temporary, but as Hollywood’s place in the entertainment industry solidified, so did regard for the sign. In 1949 “land” was removed, and the sign was completely restored in 1978.

2. Radio City Music Hall

It can be instantly recognized by its blazing neon building sign, which has a place in the hopes and dreams of everyone who set their sights on launching an entertainment career in New York City. In terms of sign design, the classic art deco styling recalls a bygone era of radio broadcasts and lavish stage shows featuring larger than life dance numbers.

3. Welcome to Las Vegas Sign

Coming in at a whopping 25 feet in height, the iconic Welcome to (Fabulous) Las Vegas sign served as sign maker Betty Willis’s gift to the city she held so dear. It was erected in 1959 and features a mix of incandescent bulbs, neon, and painted letters. It is included in Nevada’s State Register of Historic Places and mirrors the aesthetics of the multitude of casinos that call the Las Vegas strip home.
