While breast cancer impacts men and women, it is the second most common cancer American females will develop in their lifetime. With more than 300,000 new cases being diagnosed every year, it’s crucial to understand what causes this cancer and how it develops. Because breast cancer can be inherited or acquired, it’s essential to understand how each may impact you or your family’s health.

Inherited Gene Mutations

Breast cancer is defined as a disease in which cells in the breast tissue or ducts develop abnormally and multiply, leading to tumors. These tumors can metastasize and spread to other areas of the body.

breast cancerWhen this disease is classified as inherited, it means these gene mutations are caused by a hereditary factor and can be passed down from parent to child. If inherited breast cancer is present, symptoms typically develop earlier in life than if it were acquired. The most common gene mutations associated with inherited breast cancer are BRCA1 and BRCA2. Women who are carriers of the BRCA1 mutation have a 55-65 percent chance of developing cancer by the age of 70, while women with BRCA2 have a 45 percent chance of developing the disease by the age of 70.

If it is discovered that inherited breast cancer runs in your family, it’s crucial to have testing done by an oncologist to determine if you are a carrier and what your best options are when it comes preventing the disease.

Acquired Breast Cancer

Breast cancer caused by acquired gene mutations is more common than inherited conditions. This means the gene mutations that cause the disease are developed during a person’s lifetime, rather than being born with them. While many causes of acquired breast cancer are unknown, there are some factors associated with additional risk, including exposure to cancer-causing chemicals, high alcohol consumption, and obesity.

Individuals with breast cancer caused by acquired mutations typically develop the disease later in life and may not notice symptoms until a tumor is present.

With the prevalence of breast cancer in America, it’s important to monitor changes in breast tissue and speak with your physician about any abnormalities you may detect.
