Protect your Family from Radon with Mitigation

Radon is something that’s all around you, though you may not realize it’s there. Since January is National Radon Action Month the staff at A to Z Radon Solutions, a Division of Z&H Enterprises in Lincoln, NE, are offering discounted radon tests and mitigation systems. We work with homeowners and businesses to test radon levels, as well as provide mitigation systems to reduce occupant’s exposure to radon.

A Guide to Radon

1. What Is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that originates from Uranium in the earth’s crust/soil. Uranium has always been around and always will be. Radon is a colorless and odorless gas, so the only way to detect elevated radon levels is to test.  Radon is a leading cause of lung cancer; however, the effects of radon exposure, only appear in later stages, as lung cancer.

2. How Does It Enter My Home?

Radon gas can enter your home through holes or cracks in floors and walls. Radon is heavier that gas, so the highest concentration is the lowest level of a home. A common myth about radon is that Radon is not a concern in townhomes/houses that are built on a slab (i.e. no basement). Actually, radon enters the home through openings in floors and walls that are in contact with the ground or built over non-vented crawlspaces. In fact, radon levels on the first floor of a slab structure can be elevated to the same levels as that experienced in the basement of a home.  Because more time is generally spent on the first floor of a slab-built home, elevated radon levels can actually present a larger hazard to occupants than the same radon level in a home with a basement.

3. How Do I Protect My Family?

A radon test is the only way to determine if your home has an elevated radon level. No two homes are built exactly alike, so you can’t rely on your neighbors results for an indication of the radon level in your home. If radon levels are above the EPA recommended action level of 4 pCi/L, a Free mitigation system estimate can be requested.
