Whether for home defense, hunting, or recreational use, the shotgun is an enduring favorite among America’s gun owners. They have a reputation as easy firearms to use—but there are also a number of myths in circulation about them. Read on to separate fact from fiction.

Top Shotgun Myths

1. You Don’t Have to Aim

Shotgun pellets spread out slightly as they fly and hit a wider area than a single bullet would. But this effect is limited and only applies at a distance. In close quarters, it is much easier to miss your target since the spray pattern starts out narrow.

2. There’s Too Much Recoil

ShotgunMany smaller shooters shy away from shotguns out of fear of potentially powerful recoil. But any gun will kick when fired, and shotguns are not any worse in this regard than a rifle. If you aren’t sure whether you can handle a shotgun’s recoil, test it out at a shooting range to get a feel for it.

3. Firing Upward Is Harmless

In media, firing a shotgun into the air is treated as a warning, but no attention is paid to the effects of gravity on that shot. Falling pellets are a significant hazard, and in many places, it’s illegal to fire upward for this reason.

4. Birdshot Is Safer

If you’re choosing a shotgun for home defense, you may be tempted to use light ammunition such as birdshot, as some sources claim it won’t go through drywall and hit bystanders. In fact, birdshot can penetrate drywall, and it’s not the most effective shot to use on an intruder.

5. You Need Only One Shot

The stopping power of a shotgun is also highly praised, but one shot is simply not always enough against either game or an attacker. In any situation where you’re prepared to fire a gun, you should also be prepared to immediately reload and fire again to get the job done.
