During the summer, many families find their electric bills increasing to keep up with cooling their home. Thankfully, there’s more than one way to maintain a comfortable air temperature. Here are a few measures which will help you reduce air conditioner use and make the most of it.

Manage Your Windows & Vents

Anything that lets in air from outside needs to be closed during the day. At night, however, you should get the air circulating to take advantage of cooler nighttime temperatures. Make sure your AC is off when windows are open, and don’t use this technique on nights too hot to be comfortable.

Schedule Air Conditioning Maintenance

CoolingWhen your air conditioner is well maintained, it runs more smoothly. Arrange a yearly visit from your local HVAC company to inspect and tune your air conditioner.

Check Insulation

The more effectively you can prevent heat transfer between your home and the outside air, the longer the cooling effect of your air conditioner will last and the less total time it will have to run. Check the seals around windows and door frames, and if possible, update the insulation in your walls.

Upgrade Your AC

If your air conditioner is more than eight or ten years old, it’s time to replace it with a newer model. Look for EnergyStar™ appliances for the greatest energy efficiency.

Cook Less

Turning on your oven or stove creates more heat in your home than you might realize. Where possible, avoid cooking meals during the summer. Instead, eat foods like salads and sandwiches that can be prepared without heat or microwave your food.
