Removing your lawn sprinkler pump to have it serviced or put away for winter will require you to understand the proper steps to do it right. It’s a fairly simple process you can tackle whenever you’re ready. Below is a list of steps that you can follow, as needed.

How to Remove Your Sprinkler Pump in 5 Simple Steps

1. Turn Off the Power Supply

The first thing you should do is turn off the power by unplugging the irrigation controller if your sprinkler system operates on a relay switch. Otherwise, you can simply unplug the pump from the electrical outlet if it’s connected there.

2. Disconnect the Submersible Pump

With the power off, you can now remove the submersible pump from the water. If your pump isn’t submersible, it will likely be located in your garage or basement near the water supply.

3. Separate the Wires

sprinklerYou’ll need to remove the metal plate by unscrewing it so you can separate the wires on the pump. There should be another set of small screws at each terminal on the metal plate that you’ll need to dislodge by unscrewing it.

4. Remove Piping

Next, use a pipe wrench to release the inlet pipe from the pump. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to unscrew the fitting that keeps the fixtures together. Repeat the same action to remove the fitting at the other end of the pump that is attached to the sprinkler.

5. Release the Pump

If the pump is bolted to the ground, you should unscrew it. After you’ve removed the bolts or screws, the pump is ready to be lifted and removed. Each sprinkler model is different, so check the manufacturer manual first.
