According to the American Kennel Club, there are more than 200 dog breeds, so it stands to reason there is no one-size-fits-all approach to dog grooming. What’s best for a long-haired golden retriever will not necessarily suit the wiry coat of a German shepherd. To help pet owners identify the brushing and shampooing methods best for their four-legged friends, Ty-D-Paws Express of Lincoln, NE has prepared the following pet care guide.

Dog Grooming for 4 Different Fur Types

1. Curly Hair

For dogs with curly and wavy hair, such as poodles and Havanese, use natural, sulfate-free shampoos and deep conditioners. Towel dry gently and blow-dry minimally to avoid hair damage. Use a soft brush to fluff.

2. Long Hair

dog groomingIf you have a long-haired dog like a Yorkshire terrier or Afghan, the first dog grooming product you need is a detangler. Apply it to your furry friend, then use a slicker brush to remove matting. Finish with a shampoo and conditioner made for fine hair before blow-drying.

3. Double Coat

For dogs with double coats, like collies and huskies, use a pin brush to smooth out the undercoat. Next, brush the topcoat with a wide-toothed comb. Apply a detangling product to any tough spots, and use your fingers to gently remove mats as you condition.

4. Smooth Coat

Although smooth coated dogs like dachshunds are low maintenance, they still need a good brushing here and there. User a soft bristle brush to gently massage the hair and skin. After shampooing and conditioning, allow the coat to air dry.

Even with proper dog grooming at home, the best way to maintain your dog’s coat is with regular visits to a professional groomer. In addition to bathing and cutting your canine companion’s fur, Ty-D-Paws Express performs dental care, nail trimming, and flea removal. Call (402) 405-3999 to book an appointment.
