As powerful of a device as a laptop is, it still needs to be treated with care to stay in excellent condition. In their years of conducting computer repairs, Experimac Aurora in Colorado has established a list of best practices for minimizing damage and extending the life span of these machines. Here, they share a guide to treating your laptop well.

How to Care for a Laptop

1. Avoid Bringing Drinks Next to Your Laptop

Even the most diligent people sometimes get distracted and will knock over a cup of coffee by accident. It only takes one time to have the hot liquid all over your machine, warping the keys and shorting internal circuits. Either use a bottle with a secure lid, put your drink on a different surface, or skip the refreshment entirely to avoid having to bring in the machine for computer repairs.

2. Don’t Work in Bed

computer repairAs tempting as it can be to open up your laptop while you’re under the covers, it’s not good for the machine. The device’s vents will suck up all of the dust and latent particles, causing an eventual jam. When the air filter doesn’t work, your laptop cannot cool itself, and the resulting heat can fry the motherboard.

3. Close Your Laptop When Done Working

While it might seem okay to always leave your laptop open, so you can return to it faster, it’s better if you shut the machine whenever you’re done using it. First, the more battery you use will eventually reduce the overall life of your laptop. Second, that idle time provides more opportunities for dust to work its way into the machine, clogging up key air passageways.

4. Be Wary of Stark Temperature Transitions

When it’s shuttled between extremes of hot and cold, condensation can form within your laptop. The resulting moisture can damage the internal circuits and drives, so you should plan to ease your machine through the transitions. Once inside from a hot day, give it a few minutes to warm up before turning it on. If you go outside from a cool space, avoid direct sunlight and similarly allow a waiting period.

Even with the most diligent plan, accidents will still happen to your laptop. If you notice any signs of damage, feel free to contact Experimac Aurora about their computer repair service.
