With the “dog days” of summer now in full swing, it’s important to make sure that your pet doesn’t become overheated or dehydrated in the extreme heat. To prevent this from happening, Evergreen Kennels, a dog kennel serving Churchville, Rochester, and surrounding areas in New York, lists five tips to keep your dog comfortable in the warm season.

Trusted Pet Kennel Shares 5 Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool This Summer

1. Don’t Leave Your Dog Inside a Parked Car

You may think you’ll be away for only a few minutes, but what if you lose track of time? The temperature inside a closed car can rise dramatically within a few minutes, a potentially dangerous situation for any dog. If you can’t take your pet with you, entrust it to a reputable dog boarding or pet sitting kennel.

2. Keep Your Dog Hydrated

kennelMake sure your dog’s drinking bowl is always filled with fresh water. Adding ice cubes to the doggie bowl can also help cool down your canine companion. When walking your dog on a particularly hot day, keep a bottle of water handy in case your pet gets thirsty. Keep in mind that dogs with darker coats absorb more heat compared to those with lighter colored ones and may need a bit more water throughout the day.

3. Keep Your House Cool

During hot summer days, make sure your dog is cool and comfortable inside the house. Turn the AC on and set it around 78 to 80 degrees. If you don't have an air conditioner, turn on your electric fan and open the windows. To prevent the sun’s scorching rays from entering, close the curtains, drapes, or window blinds.

4. Groom Your Pet

Your dog’s undercoat is part of its natural cooling system, but when not properly maintained, it can prevent airflow to your dog’s skin. Frequent brushing helps remove dead fur and keeps your dog’s coat healthy. If your pet has long fur, make the effort to remove any mats and tangles.

5. Buy a Kiddie Pool

Swimming is one of the most refreshing activities your dog can do during the summertime. If you don’t have a swimming pool at home, buy a plastic kiddie pool instead. Not only will your dog have a chance to cool off, but it will also have a fun time playing with you. Just make sure to place the pool in a shaded area away from direct sunlight.
