If you’re expecting your first child, you probably have a lot of questions about pregnancy and the birthing process. One of the most exciting and important milestones during this time is the ultrasound—it gives the doctor essential information about your baby’s growth and health, and you get to see them for the first time. Here’s what to expect during the appointment.

When Does the First Ultrasound Take Place?

It usually occurs during the first trimester, usually around 8 to 12 weeks. This lets the doctor estimate your due date based on the size of the baby. They will also listen to the baby’s heart and check that they are growing and developing.

How Is the Ultrasound Performed?

ultrasoundIn the first trimester, the baby isn’t large enough for the doctor to view with an external, abdominal ultrasound. Instead, they will insert a wand-shaped probe in the birth canal. The probe transmits soundwaves through the vaginal walls and into the uterus. For a clearer picture, the doctor may ask you to arrive with a full bladder.

The procedure is safe and typically painless. Some women may experience a little spotting or a small amount of discharge from the lubrication gel that’s used with the probe, but this shouldn’t last for more than a couple of hours.

What Will You See?

You will get a black and white image of the baby, but it’s too early to see any development of facial features. You’ll see a head, arms, and legs, and the doctor will measure the baby’s size. You’ll also be able to hear their heartbeat.
