When a new baby is set to join the family, there’s a certain buzz of excitement throughout the household. If you already have a child, however, all of the attention shifting to their new sibling might breed some jealousy. To ensure your child doesn’t resent their younger sibling, make sure they feel included, particularly in the infant care preparations. The following guide will help you make sure your child is ready for a new baby to be in their life.

How to Prepare Your Child for a New Sibling

1. Let Them in on the Pregnancy

At some point, you’ll need to let your child know the baby is coming. When is the right time to do this? In truth, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Depending on your child’s maturity level, the big reveal can differ. In general, however, you should let them know when you tell the rest of your family and friends.

2. Be Ready for a Few Tantrums

In the view of a child, this new baby is stealing their thunder. No matter how much attention you continue to give your oldest, they’re still used to being your sole focus and will likely act out. Take this in stride, and remember not to be too hard on them. Remind them that you’re there for them, but know when to give them some alone time.

3. Include Them in the Process

Ask them to help you with simple tasks involving the baby’s room and infant care preparations, and explain to them what having a sibling is going to be like. Kids love having a sense of responsibility, so creating a relationship before your due date will help them feel more positive about the new baby.

4. Plan One-on-One Time

Your child might be feeling insecure. They need some reassurance that they’re still special to you. Set some time aside each day to spend with them alone, before and after the baby is born. If you find you’re particularly busy some days, enlist in the help of grandparents or other close relatives.

5. Familiarize Them With Babies

They might not have been babies that long ago, but young children generally aren’t ready for the noises, sights, and smells involved in infant care. Let them know the baby is going to cry and make messes. Point babies out to them whenever you see them in public, and meet up with friends or family members with infants to allow them to interact.
