The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway of carpal bones and ligaments on the palm side of the wrist. The tunnel protects a nerve to the hand and the nine tendons that bend the fingers. When the tendons swell, they press on the nerve. That’s when the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome occur.

Symptoms include tingling and numbness in the hand and fingers, including lack of sensation in the little finger. Pain may radiate up the arm and shoulder. A constant loss of feeling in some fingers means the condition has advanced and medical treatment is necessary.

Causes include bone spurs, a narrow carpal tunnel and swelling of the tendons in the carpal tunnel. Swollen tendons may be caused by arthritis, diabetes, fluid retention during pregnancy, and repetitive flexion and extension of the hand and wrist tendons.

This problem can be debilitating. Medically, medications, bracing, and surgery are options with mixed results.Chiropractic, acupuncture, laser, and exercises have been very beneficial, safe, and effective, usually within 4-6 weeks.
