If you drive a vehicle, then you rely on brakes to safely stop it at any point while on the road. Unfortunately, these parts will experience regular wear and will need to be replaced at some point. Sometimes your brakes might start exhibiting signs that they need maintenance earlier than scheduled—knowing these signals will ensure you continue to operate your car safely.

How to Tell When It’s Time for a Brake Inspection

1. Strange Sounds

Many modern brake pads are designed to emit a high-pitched squeal when it’s time to have them replaced. If you ignore this sign, it will eventually turn into a harsh grinding sound, which means you’ve completely worn through the brake pads. Ideally, you don’t ever want to hear this noise, as it means you’ll have to replace the rotors, which is much more expensive than simply replacing the pads.

2. Vibrating Steering Wheel or Pulling

brakesAlthough it’s a less common problem, sometimes pressing on the brakes can cause your steering wheel to vibrate. Riding the brakes or sudden, forceful braking can cause the rotors to warp. If you feel the car pulling to one side, this likely means the brakes are putting uneven pressure on the wheels and require an inspection.

3. Temperamental Pedals

When brakes become temperamental, the brake pedal will often follow suit. You may have to apply a lot of pressure before the brakes engage, or the slightest touch could cause the brakes to grab. Any inconsistencies in pedal response call for an inspection immediately.

4. Light

The most obvious sign that you should bring your vehicle in for a brake inspection is the dashboard light signaling. On most modern cars, this indicator will go off after a certain amount of miles; however, some vehicles will identify unique problems as they occur.
