Endometriosis impacts an estimated 11 percent of women between the ages of 11 to 44 in the United States. It occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus, often in the fallopian tubes or cervix. When this tissue “sheds” as part of the monthly menstrual cycle, it can’t exit through the vagina as it normally would—leading to painful inflammation and cramps. It can also impact a woman’s fertility. Luckily, there are treatments available.

5 Effective Endometriosis Treatments

1. Pain Medications

Pain medications, especially anti-inflammatory drugs, can address the inflammation and related discomfort that comes with endometriosis. For milder cases, this may be a sufficient solution.

2. Hormone Therapy

endometriosisOral contraceptives with estrogen and progestin can prevent ovulation and reduce menstrual flow, mitigating the impact of endometriosis. Simple use of progestin alone is also possible. Another option is gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, which stop ovarian hormone production altogether—a medically induced menopause. Danazol, a synthetic derivative of the male hormone testosterone, can also help.

3. Conservative Surgery

Women experiencing more severe endometriosis who have tried the above options may opt for conservative surgery as the next step. A skilled surgeon can remove the excess endometrial tissue that has grown outside of the womb while preserving as much of the uterus and ovaries as possible. This may increase odds of pregnancy.

4. Assisted Reproductive Technology

Endometriosis can affect fertility in various ways. Scar tissue or abnormal cells can block the ovary releasing eggs or the fallopian tubes. In-vitro fertilization can help in such cases, as it allows for a fertilized egg to be implanted directly into the uterus.

5. Hysterectomy

A total hysterectomy is a surgery that removes the uterus, cervix, and both ovaries. For women with severe endometriosis, this may be the ultimate solution. This option is only for those who are not hoping to carry a baby in the future.
