From sports injuries to icy walkways, there are many causes of a sprained ankle. Fortunately, it’s highly treatable, and symptoms typically last a few days. Like any injury, a sprain will heal much more effectively if you know how to treat it. The podiatrist at St. Peters Foot & Ankle: Samual T. Wood-DPM, LLC in St. Peters and Florissant, MO, explains what to do.

How to Care for a Sprained Ankle

1. Rest

Rest is crucial to healing. Stay off the ankle as much as possible. Avoid moving it unnecessarily or putting weight on it for at least 48 hours after the injury. You may need to use crutches if it’s a severe sprain.

2. Apply Ice & Compression

sprained ankleApply ice packs to the ankle or submerge the foot in an ice bath for about 20 minutes at a time and at least three times a day. You can also use a bag of frozen peas if you don’t have an ice pack. Wrap the pack or bag in a washcloth, shirt, or pillowcase to prevent it from burning the skin. Ice helps reduce swelling, bruising, muscle spasms, and pain. You should also use a compression material such as a bandage or athletic tape to minimize swelling and pain. Keep icing and compressing for two or three days after the injury.

3. Elevate

This will also prevent swelling. While you’re icing the injury or when you’re sitting or lying down, lift the ankle, so it’s above or parallel to your heart.

4. See a Podiatrist

If the symptoms don’t subside, visit a podiatrist. They’ll ask you to explain what happened and your symptoms. They may need to X-ray the ankle to determine the severity of the injury and develop a treatment plan. If the foot appears discolored, deformed, or dislocated, or if you experience severe pain, swelling, or numbness, you may require surgery.
