For residents of the Lincoln, NE, metropolitan area, summer in the historic Haymarket District brings a welcome sight: the return of the farmer's market. Every Saturday from May to October, the sidewalks in front of the square’s shops and restaurants feature an abundance of local products, including fresh produce, baked goods, and beautiful hand-crafted gifts. Here are a few reasons to check out one of the Haymarket’s most beloved events.

Top 4 Reasons to Visit the Farmer’s Market at Haymarket

1. Fresh Produce

restaurantThere's no better place than a farmer's market to find fresh produce and support small, local growers. It's also the perfect antidote to the weekly grocery store grind. This year, one of the highlights of the Haymarket farmer's market is local farmer William Ashley Gordon, the only mushroom grower in the state of Nebraska. Every Saturday, Gordon will be selling bags of his increasingly popular fungi.

2. Hand-Crafted Goods

In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, the booths at the Haymarket farmer's market host artists and artisans from all over the region. Patrons can find everything from art and jewelry to handmade candles, wind chimes, and birdhouses. It's a great opportunity to adorn your home with some local color or shop for gifts for friends and family.

3. The Great Outdoors

The beautiful weather is another reason to come out to the farmer's market. Who doesn't love wandering from booth to booth, hunting for fresh vegetables and local wares under the morning sun?

4. Cocktails & Snacks at Your Favorite Restaurant

Thanks to its convenient location, the Haymarket farmer's market is also close to some of Lincoln’s best restaurants and shops. After you load up on goods from the vendors, it feels great to relax on an outdoor patio with a bloody Mary, mimosa, or a cold beer.

Don’t shop hungry! Start your day at the farmer’s market right with breakfast from Buzzard Billy's. The local Cajun restaurant opens an hour early at 10 am to fuel Haymarket shoppers with delicious, Southern fare. The menu includes specialties like fried alligator tail, shrimp creole, and jambalaya. After taking in the sights, sounds, and scents of the farmer’s market, relax with a few cocktails and appetizers on the large covered patio. Visit the restaurant's website to peruse the menu or call (402) 475-8822 for more information.
