A woman’s body prepares her for labor about 42 weeks into pregnancy, as the cervix dilates to deliver the baby efficiently. However, there are several circumstances in which OB-GYN professionals may induce labor through medication or other means. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the approach should only be used when medical risks are present.

Why an OB-GYN May Induce Labor

1. Overdue Pregnancy

Pregnancies lasting over 42 weeks may cause nutritional deficiencies because the amount of nutrients the fetus receives from the placenta slowly decreases. OB-GYN professionals usually do not recommend inducing labor before 39 weeks as per the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

2. Uterine Infection

OB-GYNChorioamnionitis is a type of bacterial uterine infection wherein bacteria invades the amnion and chorion membranes surrounding the fetus. Bacteria from the vagina, such as anaerobic or e.Coli, infect the uterus, potentially causing complications like blood clots in the pelvis and lungs, infections in the uterine lining and bloodstream, and heavy blood loss during delivery.

3. Placental Abruption

The placenta, or the organ responsible for nourishing the fetus through the umbilical cord, can sometimes disconnect from the inner uterine walls. Partial or complete placental abruption occurs for several reasons, such as hypertension and smoking during pregnancy, with symptoms including vaginal bleeding and back pain. The issue limits the amount of nutrients the fetus receives among numerous other complications, including kidney failure and blood clotting.

4. Serious Illness

Contracting a serious illness such as gestational diabetes is another reason a gynecologist will suggest inducing labor. Gestational diabetes can develop around the 24th week and causes the body to deliver extra blood glucose to the fetus. It stores the excessive amount as fat and can lead to macrosomia, or an overweight baby.

5. Amniotic Sac Rupture

If the amniotic sac surrounding the fetus ruptures but labor doesn’t start at least 48 hours later, it is usually best to induce it. A lack of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus increases the chance of stillbirth, defects, or other health problems due to compressed organs.
