4 Common Expressions Used in Muay Thai Class, Scarsdale, New York

Whether you’re interested in losing weight or learning a new sport, Muay Thai is a popular martial art that offers numerous benefits for the mind and body. Developed in Thailand, it utilizes a combination of kicks, punches, and knee and elbow techniques. If you signed up for your first class, the skilled instructors at 914 Training Center in Scarsdale, NY, are here to share some common Muay Thai expressions you should learn.

4 Thai Expressions Used in Muay Thai

1. Sabai

muay thaiIf your trainer tells you to be “Sabai” while you’re sparring or doing pad work, they want you to relax. Don’t force your attack, and take the tension out of your body. While this can be difficult for a beginner to understand, over time, you will learn how to drop the tension from your movements and posture.

2. Dern

While “dern” literally translates to “walk,” your trainer is asking you to move forward and put pressure on your opponent. Walk through or block your opponent’s counter-attacks while backing them into a corner or cutting them off.

3. Chok Dee

“Chok dee” means “good luck” in Thai, and it’s a common expression used among Muay Thai fighters. If you are about to get in the ring to spar with another opponent, you should wish them luck before it begins.

4. Jai Yen

You may hear “Jai Yen” or the last word “yen” repeated twice. This means they want you to act cool or chill out, and it may be used if you are fighting overly aggressive. Muay Thai is about dominance, not about aggression, and “Jai Yen” is a helpful reminder.

With these expressions in your back pocket, mastering the art of Muay Thai will go smoothly. If you’re interested in learning Muay Thai, the instructors at 914 Training Center in Scarsdale, NY, offer classes for all levels.
