Fire pumps are an important component of fire protection systems, providing more pressure for water to put out a blaze. Having a fire pump comes with many benefits to keep your property safe and to ensure there is enough energy to supply water during an emergency. Below is a brief explanation of how they work and their benefits.

The Basics of Fire Pumps

What Are Fire Pumps?

Fire pumps are critical for providing additional water pressure to a fire protection system. They don’t create water themselves, but instead increase the energy needed to efficiently suppress fires. These pumps can be attached to sprinkler systems and other external water sources near the emergency. Some can even be attached to wells, tanks, or a body of water.

The most common is a horizontal-split case, which is easy to use, comes in a variety of sizes, and can move large amounts of water quickly. A vertical-split case offers the same benefits, but its vertical structure is great for limited floor space. It also protects the motor from flooding. Vertical in-line pumps are smaller, compact, and don’t require special padding or foundations. All three of these require a positive suction to operate.

Vertical turbines don’t require positive suction pressure and can work without priming, making them good for underground tanks or wells as they force the water up through a pipe. Finally, end suction pumps are horizontal and are similar to the turbine style in the way they suction and release water.

What Are the Benefits of Fire Pumps?

The biggest reason to have a fire pump is for situations where the water supply does not have enough pressure to work with a fire protection system. Taller buildings or large warehouses that need a high volume of water will require a boost from a fire pump.

Another instance where a fire pump is helpful is when the water supply is drawn from a ground level water storage tank. The pump will help pressurize the water so it douses flames quickly.
