School is out for summer and it’s time for vacation. Whether you’re planning a weekend at the beach or a long road trip, you’ll want to make sure the whole family is safe and comfortable on the way, including your pet. Jim Skinner Honda, a car dealership in Dothan, AL, is here with four tips to ensure you and your pets are safe on the road this summer.
Car Dealership’s 4 Safety Tips for Pet Travel
1. Pack Smart
When you’ve finished packing your essentials, don’t forget about your pet’s needs. Take everything they’ll need to have a safe and happy trip, including a water bowl and water bottle, food and food bowl, brush, poop bags, toys, and a bed or blanket. Pack a carrier as well, even if you plan to have your dog sit in the back seat. You may need it if they become anxious or are sick or injured. Take their medications and medical records, as well as current tags, a collar, and leash.
2. Buckle Up
You wouldn’t ride in the car without a seatbelt, much less let your kids do it, so don’t let your pets do so either. Keep your pet in their carrier and buckle it in or secure them with a safety seat or harness that buckles into the car seatbelt.
3. Never Leave Them in the Car Unattended
Never leave your pet in a car unattended in warm weather. The inside of a parked car is like an oven in the heat and even a few minutes inside a hot car can put your pet in danger of dehydration, heat stroke, or death. Cracking the windows doesn’t help much; if you must leave them inside for a few minutes, crack the windows and leave the AC blasting.
4. Get Them Comfortable With the Car
New environments can be intimidating for pets, so unless you travel with them frequently, they may be anxious in the car. Acclimate them by taking them on quick trips around town in the weeks leading up to your trip. If they get carsick, take them to the veterinarian before your vacation for treatment; an inner ear issue sometimes causes carsickness.
Traveling with a pet can be fun and rewarding for all involved. In addition to these safety tips, make sure your vehicle is in top shape before hitting the road this summer.
