If your teeth are crooked or misaligned but you don’t want to wear cumbersome metal braces for the next few years, Invisalign® could be the answer. This innovative orthodontic treatment straightens the teeth using a series of clear aligners, each of which is typically worn for two consecutive weeks. Unlike braces, these customized aligners are entirely discrete and easy to remove for eating and brushing. Here, Jeffrey E. Bang, DMD, PC of Staunton, VA, answers a few of the most frequently asked questions about the Invisalign procedure.

1. Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign can effectively fix overcrowding, gaps, crossbites, malocclusion, mild underbites, slight overbites, and minor crookedness. If you want to repair any of these issues but don’t want to resort to traditional braces, you may be a good candidate for the aligners.

2. How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

invisalignThe Invisalign approach is typically no more expensive than braces. The precise cost will depend on a variety of factors, including the total treatment duration and complexity of the case. Fortunately, many dental insurance plans will cover at least a percentage of the treatment. Easy monthly payment plans are also available.

3. How Often Can You Take the Aligners Out?

Invisalign patients should wear their aligners for 22 hours per day to achieve the best results. You can take the aligners out to eat, brush, and attend special events like weddings or important meetings like job interviews. Otherwise, though, it is best to wear them all the time for optimum effectiveness.

4. Do the Aligners Affect How You Talk?

It can take a day or two for your tongue to adjust to the aligners in your mouth. However, any issues regarding speech are temporary and will disappear in a matter of days as long as you wear the aligners for the total recommended time.
