If you have a tooth that is severely decayed, inflamed, or infected, you may need a root canal. With this procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed so the inside of the affected tooth can be treated. If your dentist has recommended this procedure, it’s for good cause; they are trying to save your tooth and prevent diseases, abscesses, and other complications.

Root Canal FAQ

How Do You Know You Need a Root Canal?

You may experience pain and swelling or signs of infection — like fever or pus — at the affected site. Your dentist can definitively determine whether a root canal is necessary using dental X-rays. Any severe dental pain always warrants a trip to your dentist for examination.

What Is the Process Like?

root canalFirst, an access hole is drilled into the tooth. A special tool is then used to remove bacteria-laden pulp, decayed nerve tissue, and debris. After the interior is cleaned, the access hole is sealed. A second appointment is required to refill the tooth’s interior using a sealer paste and rubber compound.

Will it Hurt?

Your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, so you shouldn’t feel much discomfort. You may experience swelling afterward, so keep your head elevated and take any medicines as prescribed. By following the doctor’s orders, you’ll feel better in no time.

How Fast Will You Heal?

Most patients can return to regular activities the day after a root canal, although the tooth may still feel sensitive due to inflammation. Minimize using the tooth for chewing until treatment is complete. Soft foods like smoothies and mashed potatoes are favorable choices immediately after the procedure.
